Ashish Ramgobin-Gandhi

Ashish, great grand-daughter of Gandhi, is a social activist living and working from the Phoenix Settlement in South Africa. The Phoenix Settlement is where Gandhi first discovered the power of non-violence and his legacy was born.

As a social activist, Ashish has worked with the local government within South Africa in developing effective planning mechanisms, sustainable development and community mobilisation. Currently she is managing a sustainable development centre in South Africa focussing on the involvement of poor people in livelihoods promotion, institutional capacity building of NGOs and civil society development.

I traveled to South Africa to look at both the story of the anti-Apartheid struggle and the roots of Gandhi's movement. It was an honor to step into the home of an air to Gandhi's great tradition. Ashish has taken her great grandfather's teachings and brought them into the modern world where she practices spirit in action amongst the people of South Africa.

The Phoenix Settlement still stands. It's resonating with simplicity and power, an important place of pilgrimage into the heart of non-violent resistance.
