Julia Butterfly Hill

Julia Butterfly Hill Julia Butterfly Hill is a writer, poet and activist who brought international attention to the plight of the world's last remaining ancient forests when she climbed 180 feet up a 1000 year-old Redwood tree and refused to come down. Her historic 738-day protest of the environmental destruction caused by clear-cutting ancient redwoods culminated with a negotiated agreement that provided permanent protection for the tree ("Luna") and a nearly 3 acre buffer-zone.

In 2006, Julia was moved to sit in another tree to protest the bulldozing of the South Central Farm in LA.

Julia speaks regularly at universities, has addressed the UN, lobbied congress, and continues to stand on the front lines of environmental and social justice issues worldwide. Her message of hope, empowerment, love and respect for all life has inspired millions of people worldwide.

Julia Butterfly Hill at South Central Farms Julia Butterfly Hill has become an icon of spiritual activism around the world. Ten years after her historic tree sit in Luna she decided once again that it was time to put herself on the line at South Central Farms. During her weeks in the tree she also went on a fast in the tradition of Gandhi and Cesar Chavez. Julia is like a living Joan of Arc, a true human sunrise - someone whose very being is infused with divine action, commitment and humility.
