Sacred Run - Nevada Nuclear Test Site

I joined the Shoshone on their Annual Sacred Run at the Test Site just before 9.11, and returned 6 years later.

Each morning they hold a sunrise ceremony, drumming, praying, making offerings, and being smudged with purifying sage. At night they pitch a tepee, camping by the edge of the test site, surrounded by a barbed wire fence and ominous "No Trespassing" signs. They plant willow trees along the perimeter of the Test site. I camped with the Shoshone and and was there for the culmination of the Sacred Run at the annual Mother's Day Protest held at the gates to Mercury, the forbidden city of the test site. The runners marched down to the "line", where armed guards and federal police gathered, prepared to arrest anyone that crosses.
