Founding Conference of the NSP
And yet, we believe that these movements have tended to underplay or even deny a very important dimension of human life-the spiritual dimension. And this deficit has limited the potential impact that all these movements could have. It will take a very different kind of movement - one founded on and giving central focus to a spiritual vision - to create a real alternative to the political Right, to the fundamentalists (religious and political), and to our society's ethos of selfishness, materialism, and cynicism.
The NSP seeks to create that alternative. They are a community of people from many faiths and traditions, called together by the Spiritual Covenant with America (see The Network of Spiritual Progressives) and its vision of healing and transforming our world.
The Founding Conference was held in Berkeley, California in the fall of 2005. Van Jones delivered an inspiring keynote address to the hundreds of participants - his memorable cry was "We've got to get some feet up under these prayers!".

Next I got on a plane and headed to Washington D.C. for the conference of the Network of Spiritual Progressives. This was the second founding conference, the first was in Berkeley June 2005. This was the east coast version. 1200 people showed up. There was a sense of excitement in the air, the feeling of the birth of a movement. One morning we gathered for a prayer at the Whitehouse, and had over 100 meetings with members of Congress, to present the ideas of the NSP.
